Pierre Lassonde Presidential Chair and professor of management for the online MBA program discussed the advantages of the program. mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
Eccles School: Welcome to Podcast Eccles School, I am your host Sheena Mc-Farland.
Earning an MBA is a great way to take the next step in your career and go from the manager to the C suite
But it can be a challenge to balance school hours, with a work schedule full-time,
but David Eccles School MBA program online business' gives students the flexibility to work
their own places and in their own time frames without losing the academic degree of accuracy. join me today Jack Brittain,
Pierre Lassonde presidential president and professor of management and Cassia Connors, current MBA student online. mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
Thank you for joining me today.
Cassia Connors: Thank you Sheena.
Jack Brittain: Thanks for having us. It's great.
Eccles School: First, Jack, let's talk about the program's teachers. Students can work with the same faculty of high quality would meet here on campus?
Jack Brittain: Oh, absolutely. I myself, for example, they teach all leadership courses on campus and also teach me online programs. mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
So most of my colleagues in the online program are also teaching in our professional MBA or Executive MBA Our MBA program and our day and everyone has a lot of experience in teaching.
It may not be in the program, if you are not actually deliver the product quality.
And I just saw a level of dedication on the part I'm working with people who are really committed to the program and really enjoy it.
This is probably the surprise is how much fun it was to teach in this program.
Eccles School: Well, that's great. Let's talk about effectiveness. Teachers can be at some point dare to teach online,
but what surprised him about teaching and learning online?
Jack Brittain: I think one of the things that really surprised me is personal and interactive way is that it is absolutely the opposite of what you would expect.
Believes we are in a classroom, it should be highly interactive, but the reality is in the classroom, people know that sitting next. The power to enter and give lectures and a couple can go through three students after school and maybe talk.mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
People could come to office hours, usually not.
And so, in a typical classroom,
there is actually a very low level of interactivity. And in the online program, quite the opposite of what would be expected. It is very interactive. It is very personal; all my interactions with students tend to be one-on-one. mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
We video broadcast weeks; It is several students talking at once,
I facilitate discussion. However, surprisingly and personal interactive program.
Connors: Sheena really agree with Dr. Brittain about it. I saw a student feel more like talking,
and, especially, in the table of discussion forums, it seems that he has a voice and everyone can take a course that has a voice.
So do not go out there in front of an audience to speak. And what's really interesting how interactive it has been.
Jack Brittain: One of the things I noticed and my TA have commented on it, so is the quality of online discussions are much better than the class discussions.
Thus, in the classroom, you have some people talk, they certainly have some introverts who do not speak at all. And in the online discussion forum,
He invites everyone to speak, more or less accurate, but, in fact, are also invited. And it's much easier for people without the social pressure of the classroom,
to feel comfortable sharing their ideas. And the distribution is very personal, people share their own work experience, talking about the kind of how they see the material. And it's really a certain program of distinction,
is the quality of discussion is much better, introverts show,
but there is also a quality of participation that actually improves the quality of learning that is occurring.
Connors: Absolutely, I agree.
School Eccles: That sounds like a learning environment for students fabulous.
We speak of interactivity and personal touch to it,
Jack what has been your favorite part of teaching for the MBA program online?

Jackie Brittain: Again, it's amazing. It was the first time he had taught online when we started the program a couple of years ago.
So I'm now facing the third time in it. But when you think online, you kind of think oh I'll be making videos and what else is going to be, but the fact that once you did,
and it was filmed in the classroom and then edited and did a lot of complementary videos,
but the reality of delivering the classroom is very focused student. You're spending all your time interacting with students. mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
And I think, for most teachers, which is what they like most about teaching is the only one in an experiment,
the opportunity to see people. And we learned a lot from the experiences of people,
see them post them online. I really like the weekly videoconferences, because it is much more give and take and talk about the experience of people. It is like a review of the important lessons of the week. It is one hour. mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
We videotape so that people can not go to see it and be part of the experience. But the program is very focused on students and teachers, which is really what makes it fun.
And I think the quality of learning is very, very high in the program because the level of customization you will not get into an on-campus program.
Eccles School: That's good. And Cassia to you when he enrolled in the online MBA Eccles School program, which had only been in existence for a semester. Why did you choose this program in comparison with other schools?
Connors: Sheena, I liked the University of Utah people. I will say the staff here is second to none. I mean they were wonderful,
put my mind at ease to take an online program an online system as they travel every week for work.
And so, to talk about my situation with them and after going through the request
They were just fabulous to work with him and knew it was where I wanted to be. And thank God because I am a local, so
I can enjoy coming to school and get the care I need when I need it, and I know I'm getting the same online education here as it would if you were sitting in a classroom.
Eccles School: That's good. In general, what has been your online learning and how the college met their expectations and has been accessible to you?
Connors That s a great inquiry And I want to piggyback off of what said Dr. Brittain,
It is so true that I feel I have more online interaction than you would in person.
And the concern and worry of ridicule in front of others every time you ask a question is removed. And everyone involved is there and experience with you.
I feel I received the best education not because I get so much attention and any questions you have are answered quickly as instructors. It's fabulous.
Eccles School: wonderful. And it seems that you have liked very much about the online MBA program,
there was one aspect that really stood out for you as you like?
Connors: In addition to people and experience, I would say that the career program is exceptional and may be the biggest part of my future progress throughout the program. He was surprised to learn when I signed, unfortunately, I had no idea of the benefit that would come to me. And what is an excellent program;
you have a career coach who helps you daily and helps to sell in the real world. And so you can take all the learning activities and classroom and apply them,
but then you have this car is really there in your life, in your career to help you move too.
Eccles School: Great. This is how a great benefit. Why would you recommend to others who are looking for an MBA program?
Connors: I would say that the rigor of the degree. I learned a lot just from lectures and class activities,
but also discussions and interactions. I liked it and I liked people and I liked all his experience. I would recommend to anyone.
Eccles School: Great. And Jack recommend a program online here for MBA L compared to other schools or even here on campus?
Jack Brittain: Well, everything, and curious service means people who have students from all over the world, but also serves the local population, which complicated travel schedules. We had two people in the program who are professional drivers, so we spent a lot of time sitting on the floor in the city of New York or elsewhere so you can still get your education.
So I said to myself, I know that many people in the community who are saying oh, I really want to do an MBA, but just can not, I have too long of a ride, I have all these things. And David Eccles School Online program is truly asynchronous. mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
You do when it works for you And so you can make the program labor  the circumstances have, and people have all kinds of family obligations or things that are juggling. So it's really a great program. And then he is also involved with the college that is clearly one of the best in the world. We are consistently ranked among the top 50 and sometimes even more. In the US, there are approximately 4,000 business schools, that is to start talking about the top 50. This is an amazing college, incredibly dedicated group of teachers. And so I think there is much to offer someone with this format actually workings for them.
It really works for people who are already too full-time employees in positions of responsibility. Because there is so much discussion and interaction around it, and we want students are actually part of the learning community for all other program students. And really, really works well for people who are already employed full time. Does it turned out that he learned a lot from your colleagues?
Connors: I did. I take it too, because in discussions or group work, we have to talk about what we are doing in our careers and in our work. It is a requirement. And it's amazing that things here,
things you never thought or things that you felt so alone, but realize that all go to the same and has been great. Yes. And you know what, the other thing he mentioned was the fact that it can be local and still travel and be as flexible. And I've been able to take advantage of some of the training courses weekend, women in business here. It's a fantastic series that will make lunch. And here entrepreneur program with the Lassonde Institute which is amazing when you start to take advantage of everything on campus on weekends and when available. It's been great.
School Eccles: That sounds like a great learning opportunity for students, both here in Utah and around the world. So that's great.
Well, I just want to thank you both very much for being here today and join in this discussion. I'm Sheena McFarland,
and this has been the Podcast Eccles School. mba program, mba online, executive mba online, online mbas.
